Everyone is changing their mind.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #5 came out last week. I’ll be direct. I know a lot of folks didn’t pick it up, possibly because it’s called “Superior Foes of Spider-Man.”

Don’t let that scare you off. The reviewers all looked at that title and had the same reaction you did. But here’s what they’re saying now:

The Onion AV Club: “Gut-busting ensemble comedy and slick cartooning that has made the series one of the year’s funniest comics and a top Marvel title.”

Newsarama: “This book is consistently great.”

IGN: “Wonderfully drawn, nicely paced, and exceptionally funny without being afraid to go a little bit dark, SFoS is a brilliant little title.”

Comic Book Resources: “Superior Foes” is a great stop for readers looking for fun, engaging stories that are self-contained and well-told. For the first time, these characters all feel like fleshed-out people that I continually look forward to spending time with each month.”

Flickering Myth: “Superior Foes of Spider-Man is such an enjoyable read. The perfect blend of pulpy crime fiction and comedy with just the right amount of self referential meta hijinks.”

The Outhousers: “I am just loving this book, you all need to read it, now.”

We the Nerdy: “Superior Foes continues to be one of the best books Marvel puts on the shelves.”

Read Marvel: “Fun writing, fun layout, fun art, just an overall pretty fun book.”

Weekly Comic Book Review: “plenty of humor as well as some truly memorable moments with its cast of loser super-villains, Nick Spencer simply brings a lot of entertainment for readers, which is only helped by the brilliant work of Lieber and Rosenberg.”

Comic Vine: “I can’t help but find something to delight in every scene.”

Paradox Comics: “a Marvel book with a terrific comedic slant…a beaming smile upon each reading.”

Weekly Crisis: “This comic is so good. Nick Spencer has been hitting every single script right out of the park.”

Comics The Blog “Superior Foes of Spider-Man is a series that makes it look almost frustratingly easy, that is just all-around brilliant and celebrates a lot of what makes comics excellent, without ever having to be married to just one genre or tone.”

Tiffany Smith: “I just love everything about this; one of the funniest comics out right now.”

I’ll be at a Hawkeye signing with Matt Fraction and Jesse Hamm

Signing at Floating World Comics in Portland, OR:

Join Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber and Jesse Hamm on Wednesday March 13th to celebrate the release of HAWKEYE VOL. 1 MY LIFE AS A WEAPON TP. We will also have copies of the Hurricane Sandy benefit issue, Hawkeye #7 for sale. 100% of the proceeds from the event will be donated to American Red Cross, to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. Hawkeye #7 artists Steve Lieber and Jesse Hamm will draw sketches for fans in exchange for American Red Cross donations.

From CBR:

Writer Matt Fraction was at the center of a special signing appearance for “Hawkeye” #7, autographing copies of the Hurricane Sandy-themed issue and raising money for the American Red Cross.

“The whole book is about the dude who doesn’t have superpowers so it seemed like if we were going to try to do something to help people, that’s the book to do it…hopefully we’ll be able to write some checks and do a little good,” Fraction told CBR during the event about the special issue of the popular Marvel series.

Inspired to write the issue after Hurricane Sandy decimated parts of New York and New Jersey, Fraction is donating his royalties from the issue to the American Red Cross. Though the Portland-based writer was not in New York when Sandy hit, the devastation left in the storm’s wake prompted him to want to do something to help the victims.

“I spent an awful lot of time there and had lived there for business purposes,” Fraction explained. “I realized that not only would I have been evacuated, I would have been under water if I was still there in the place I had been living.”

Sequential Art Gallery presents Steve Lieber’s original art from Caitlin R. Kiernan’s “ALABASTER: WOLVES”, sponsored in part by both Dark Horse Comics & Bridge City Comics. With the mini-series newly collected & released in hardcover, copies of “Alabaster: Wolves” will available for sale & for signing by Lieber. The exhibit opens this Thursday, February 7th, with the artist’s reception & book signing from 6pm to 10pm.

“Alabaster: Wolves” marks the first appearance of Caitlin R. Kiernan’s demon-hunting, monster-killing character, Dancy Flammarion, in comic book form. Unexpectedly left alone by the powers that guide her, Dancy faces off against a family of demonic wolves. Lieber’s art pairs brilliantly with Kiernan’s storytelling, providing the reader with the beautiful-and-terrifying fever dream that is Dancy’s life.
Steve Lieber’s comics and illustration have been published by DC Comics, Marvel, Scholastic, Dark Horse, Image, Carus Publishing, Dupuis and many others. He’s best known as the artist of the graphic novel Whiteout, adapted by Warner Brothers as a movie starring Kate Beckinsale. (www.stevelieber.com)

“Alabaster: Wolves” will be on display throughout the month of February, with gallery hours on Thursdays from 3pm-7pm (except for Valentine’s Day), Saturdays from 11am-5pm, and by appointment. “Alabaster: Wolves” will close at the end of business on Thursday, February 28th.

Open for regular gallery hours Thursdays (3pm-7pm) and Saturdays (11am-5pm) or by appointment. The gallery showcases local artists who explore the concept of sequential art, which is loosely defined as using consecutive images to tell a story. Curated by Kaebel JK Hashitani and Merrick Monroe.

New Shooters Edition May 2013

I recently learned that Shooters, the contemporary war graphic novel I illustrated for DC/Vertigo will be reissued in a new paperback edition this may. Shooters was written by Eric Trautmann and Brandon Jerwa. It made Comic Book Resources’ Best of 2012 list. And here’s a review.

For more about Shooters, go to the unofficial website SteelRiverSecurity.com And if you’re not willing to wait, I’ve got a few hardback copies left. You can order an autographed copy direct from me via Periscope Studio’s Etsy store.

Last issue of Alabaster:Wolves!

The fifth and final issue of Alabaster:Wolves comes out next week from Dark Horse Comics. Alabaster was created and written by Caitlin R Kiernan, and the comic has featured lineart by me, color by Rachelle Rosenberg, and covers by Greg Ruth.

I’ve had a terrific time drawing this series, and the wonderful reception we’ve had from fans has been truly gratifying. I should take a moment to say thanks to Hunter Wook-Jin Clark, Tina Kim, and especially Tadd Galusha for their valuable assistance on the project. Also Dylan Meconis who posed for a million reference photos, and probably knows Dancy better than I do.

SHOOTERS is available now.

A veteran of the Persian Gulf war returns home to a broken life after a tragic friendly fire incident, only to return to Iraq for a last shot at redemption as a private military contractor.

SHOOTERS is available now in comic shops and bookstores. 130 pages, hardcover, published by DC Vertigo.

Girl Walk All Day party in Portland

Sara and I are huge fans of Girl Talk’s ALL DAY. When we found out about the GIRL WALK/ALL DAY video project, we fell in love and watched it over and over. The director Jacob Krupnick has been traveling across the country putting on live screenings with dance parties. Tonight they came to Portland, and I had to attend.

I’m pretty sure I was the oldest person in the room- certainly the oldest person dancing. (And if this picture is to be believed, I was also the tallest.) Of course I pulled out my sketchbook. It’s never easy nailing the gestures of dancers- they aren’t exactly holding still- but if you stare hard enough, you can spot some patterns (and creep a few people out while you’re at it.) The picture below assembles some of the night’s more intelligible doodles. I had a great time. Big, big thanks to everyone involved.
